Several members of the

Butler Early Bird Toastmasters

participated in the Area 6 Speech Contest held recently in New Castle.

participated as a judge for the event.

Linda Harrigan

received third place in the Table Topics Contest.

Walt Smith

was the first- place winner in both the Table Topics and Humorous Speech contests. Smith then continued to the division contest held in Erie, where he took first place in both Table Topics and Humorous Speech. He also placed second in Table Topics during a contest in Greentree.

With help from the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Western Pennsylvania, a 12-year old Harrisville girl and her family ate Thanksgiving turkey with a renewed outlook.

Christie Donaldson,

along with her parents, Rusty and Michele, and her siblings, Cody, 11; Grace, 5; and Emily, 3, returned from a Disney cruise just in time for the holiday.

Christie was diagnosed with leukemia about two years ago. She was nominated for a wish by Sue Makoroff, a social worker at Children's Hospital. Christie's leukemia is now in remission, said Michele Donaldson.

The trip included a flight to Florida and a Disney cruise to Castaway Key.

Bess Higgins,

101, of Cabot was honored recently as one of the first centenarians to be inducted into the Ten-Squared Talking Book Club, a group of library patrons honored by the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped of the Library of Congress.

NLS lends talking books and magazines for free by mail to individuals who cannot read standard size print or who cannot hold or turn the pages of a book.

Higgins has resided in the Butler area most of her life. She

is an avid reader of biography, history and historical fiction.
