Stacey Green had 19 points and 17 rebounds to lead the Slippery Rock University women's basketball team to a 65-52 win over Tiffin (Ohio) Saturday.
The victory gave The Rock (2-1) the Towne Place Suites Tip-Off Classic championship at the University of Findlay (Ohio).
Green had 34 points and 24 rebounds in the tournament and was named tournament MVP. She ranks third on SRU's all-time rebounding list.
Fellow senior Erin Frankovich joined Green on the all-tournament team. She had eight points and 10 rebounds in SRU's win over Shepherd Friday night and added 18 points and seven boards against Tiffin.
Kristen Bonner had 11 points and Grove City High graduate Amber McFeely contributed 10 points and six assists against Tiffin.
Butler graduate Kim Nowakowski, a freshman forward for the California (Pa.) University women's basketball team, had 14 points and 11 rebounds Saturday in a 68-48 loss to Hillsdale.Nowakowski was California's lone representative on the Holiday Inn Classic's all-tournament team.The loss snapped California's 56-game home winning streak, which began February 2001.
MIYAZAKI, Japan - Tiger Woods won his first stroke-play tournament in more than a year Sunday, capturing the Dunlop Phoenix by eight strokes after closing with a 3-under-par 67. Woods entered the final round with a 10-stroke lead and finished at 16-under 264 in the $1.89 million event, the richest on the Japan tour.This was Woods' second title this year following the Match Play Championship in February. The last time he won a stroke-play tournament was in October 2003. He had gone a career-high 20 stroke-play tournaments without a victory.
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Annika Sorenstam outlasted Cristie Kerr Sunday at the season-ending ADT Championship, beating her with a bogey on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff.Sorenstam birdied the 16th hole to catch Kerr, and missed a 12-foot birdie putt on the 18th that led to the third playoff in the nine-year history of the LPGA tournament.Sorenstam finished the year with eight victories and just over $2.5 million.
SEVILLE, Spain - Paul Casey teamed with Luke Donald to lead England to the World Cup golf title Sunday with a one-stroke victory over Spain. The two combined for an 8-under-par 64 and had a total of 31-under 257. The Spanish team of Sergio Garcia and Miguel Angel Jimenez closed with a 66.The Irish team of Padraig Harrington and Paul McGinley finished with a 65 for third, three strokes behind England. Defending champion South Africa was fourth.The Netherlands and Austria finished eight shots back. The United States, featuring Scott Verplank and Bob Tway, shot a 72 and was 10 behind along with Sweden and Germany.
