James, Ilgauskas fuel Cavaliers' comeback

LeBron James and Zydrunas Ilgauskas brought the Cleveland Cavaliers all the way back from a 19-point deficit in the fourth quarter.

That's the kind of leadership the Indiana Pacers could have used from Ron Artest. Instead, he sat and watched his teammates stumble to a record-setting blowout.

Elton Brand had 19 points and 16 rebounds, and the Los Angeles Clippers took control of the lethargic Pacers from the start in a 102-68 victory Wednesday night, the worst home loss in Indiana history.

Artest was serving the second of a two-game benching imposed by coach Rick Carlisle because he "compromised the integrity of the team."

The volatile forward said Wednesday that he asked Carlisle for time off because of a busy schedule that included promoting a soon-to-be-released rap album.

"I was doing a lot," Artest said. "I was running around a lot and doing a whole bunch of stuff and I've also been working out, so I think I wore myself down physically, I wore myself down mentally. I was ready to take some time off, at least like a month off, but two games is enough."

The Cavaliers, on the other hand, refused to quit, rallying at home to beat previously unbeaten Phoenix 114-109 in overtime.

James scored a season-high 38 points - 17 during an amazing one-man comeback in the fourth quarter - and Ilgauskas drained a tying 3-pointer at the end of regulation on his bobblehead night.

"We were down big, and LeBron said, 'Hey, I'm going to get it done for you in the fourth quarter,'" Cavaliers coach Paul Silas said. "To win that kind of game is unbelievable."

The 19-year-old James also made the pass that set up a stunning 3-pointer by the 7-foot-3 Ilgauskas with 3.6 seconds to go against the Suns (4-1).

"He's made that shot so many times in practice," James said. "Z is a good shooter. There was no hesitation in giving it to him. I don't need to shoot every time for us to win."

With Ilgauskas knocking down two more shots from beyond 20 feet, Cleveland opened overtime with an 8-0 spurt and won its second straight after starting the season 0-3.

"It was crazy. I've never been in a game like that," Ilgauskas said. "We were down and it seemed like we had no chance. I've seen games like that before. It's nice to be on the winning side."

Drew Gooden had 16 points and a career-high 21 rebounds for the Cavaliers.

At Indianapolis, the Clippers outscored the Pacers 31-7 in the second period, holding Indiana (4-1) to a franchise low for points in a quarter.

The Pacers sure missed Artest, last season's defensive player of the year. When asked if the All-Star forward would return for Friday night's game in Philadelphia as originally planned, Carlisle said, "We'll see. It's not something I'm going to talk about right now."

At Philadelphia, Allen Iverson hit the tying jumper with 7.2 seconds left in regulation and Corliss Williamson scored seven of his 15 points in overtime to help the 76ers end a three-game skid with their first home win of the season. Richard Jefferson had 33 points and 10 rebounds for New Jersey.

At Boston, Paul Pierce returned from taking a hit in the mouth in the final minute to make a 17-foot fallaway jumper as time expired. Gary Payton scored 15 points for the Celtics and became the 29th player in NBA history to reach 20,000. It was the first home win for coach Doc Rivers.

At Washington, Larry Hughes and Antawn Jamison scored 26 points apiece for the Wizards. Grant Hill led Orlando with 24 points, six rebounds and four assists. Steve Francis added 23 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists.

At Memphis, Tenn., Pau Gasol scored 22 points, Shane Battier added 18 and the Grizzlies won for the first time in five games this season. Kobe Bryant had 20 points on 4-for-19 shooting.

At Milwaukee, Desmond Mason scored 31 points, including three clutch free throws in the final minute, and Michael Redd added 26 for the Bucks, who trailed most of the night against the expansion Bobcats.

At Salt Lake City, Chris Bosh scored 20 points, Rafer Alston hit a key 3-pointer down the stretch and Toronto handed Utah (4-1) its first loss of the season.

At San Antonio, Tim Duncan had 23 points and 18 rebounds, and Manu Ginobili added 22 points against Golden State (0-5).

At Seattle, Ray Allen scored 20 points and Rashard Lewis added 18, leading the surprising SuperSonics (4-1) to their fourth consecutive victory. Chris Webber shot 2-of-13 for the Kings (1-4).
