PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and linebacker James Farrior were named the AFC's offensive and defensive players of the week for their efforts in Sunday's 24-20 win in Dallas.

Farrior had two sacks, forced three fumbles and had nine tackles to earn the honor for the first time in his eight-year career.

Roethlisberger completed 21 of 25 passes for 193 yards and two touchdowns. He has won three-straight NFL's rookie of the week awards and was nominated again for his performance against the Cowboys.

SEATTLE - Mike Hargrove was hired Wednesday to manage the Seattle Mariners and to turn around the team after its worst season in 12 years.Hargrove, previously the manager of the Baltimore Orioles and Cleveland Indians, agreed to a three-year deal through 2007.Hargrove replaces Bob Melvin, who was fired a day after Seattle ended the season with its 99th loss, the second-most in the American League.

SEATTLE - Former Washington coach Rick Neuheisel was cleared Wednesday of wrongdoing by the NCAA for gambling in a college basketball pool, but the university had its probation extended two years.Washington's NCAA probation - initially imposed because of men's basketball recruiting violations - now runs until Feb. 9, 2007. The school was also reprimanded for failing to monitor the football program.Thomas E. Yeager, chair of the NCAA's Committee on Infractions, said that Neuheisel avoided punishment because the school's compliance officer had written memos mistakenly saying that participation in gambling pools was allowed.
