Cheer:
A laudable team effort on the part of the Butler Rotary Club and Slippery Rock University Parks and Recreation Department to improve Rotary Park in the city should be embraced by residents of the Island neighborhood.
The joint project is aimed at turning the park area into the recreational asset that it has the potential to be. Many Island neighborhood children currently get little or no benefit from the park land because it lacks facilities for fun and exercise.
All communities should seek ways to put such assets to the best use possible. Little good happens if pessimism is predominant.
Fortunately, pessimism is not part of the two groups' plans, which will be unveiled to residents of the park area at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Eagle Production Center at 514 W. Wayne St.
Besides presenting the plans, the groups are seeking comments and any other input residents choose to provide.
The groups are correct in previewing the project before any work begins.
Over the years, Rotary Park has remained a pleasant green site within the concrete and buildings that make up that part of the community. However, the park can be much more. Therefore, it will be interesting to see what the two groups are planning.
Island residents should take advantage of the opportunity to meet with representatives of the groups that are generously donating their time, efforts and money toward making Rotary Park a source of pride and community spirit.
