SRU women No. 6 in nation

The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team is ranked sixth overall and first in the Division II Northeast Region, according to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

The sixth-place ranking is the highest The Rock program has attained in its 11-year history.

The Rock had been ranked 16th in the pre-season national poll Aug. 24.

SRU defeated Gannon (7-0), Bridgeport (3-1) and Molloy (7-0) before defeating Mercyhurst 2-0 Tuesday to improve to 4-0.

Sarah Arsenault, who was named the PSAC West Player of the Week, scored her sixth goal of the season off an assist by Lauren Steele.

Jami Wilson added an insurance goal, assisted by Christy Czapor.

Golaie Karrine Riggins earned her fourth victory and third shutout of the year.

SRU sophomore forward Justin Riggle scored two goals and added an assist Monday to lead The Rock to a 4-0 win over Bloomfield (N.J.).The Rock is 4-0 on the season after an 0-5 start last year. Riggle has three goals and three assists on the campaign.Freshman forward Ed Mocarsky, who was named PSAC WestPlayer of the Week, scored his team-leading fourth goal of the year and freshman King Armentrout scored his first.Mocarsky has scored at least one goal in all four of The Rock's contests this year. He has five goals and three assists on the year.SRU returns to action at 1 p.m. Saturday when it hosts the District of Columbia.

The SRU men's water polo team split four matches over the weekend at the season-opening Navy Open.The Rock defeated Fordham 14-3 and Penn State-Behrend 14-7 before dropping 9-7 and 12-6 decisions to Salem International (W.Va.) and the Navy "B" team.Freshman Eric Olson scored 12 goals and had three assists, while sophomore Ryan Holt had seven goals and 13 assists. Goalkeeper Glenn Reepmeyer had 37 saves and 11 steals in the four games.The Rock meets Grove City at 9 p.m. Friday at the Bucknell Invitational in Lewisburg.
