Butler Country Club hosting pro-am tennis event

The second annual Butler Country Club Pro-Am Tennis Tournament takes place Sunday at the club.

The event includes eight of the top pros from Western Pennsylvania along with eight each of the top male and female players from Butler Country Club.

Each pro will join a male and female player to form eight three-person teams. Four mixed doubles teams will play in two different divisions and four men's doubles teams will play in two different divisions.

The first-place team in each division will play the first-place team of the other division, second place plays second place, etc. Points are awarded for each victory, and the trio with the most points at the end of the day wins the tournament.

"This event went into sudden death last year," said Butler Country Club tennis pro Whitney Snyder. "I'm hoping the same thing happens this year."

Jay Barkley (pro), Doug Johnston (male) and Judy Ferree (female) won last year's tournament by scoring 21 points in a 3-on-3 match.

Barkley is the lone returnee of the three.

"Jay's actually a club member with us, but he's such a good player that we put him in the pro division," Snyder said. "He'll be in the pro division again this year."

Other pros in this year's field are University of Pittsburgh dental student Chris Celechovsky, Mike Tain of Greensburg, Matt Riva of Allegheny Country Club, Brad Squires of Green Oaks Country Club, Butler graduate Brad Slamecka, Koch Conroy of Finleyville and Gary Schwartz of Butler.

Celechovsky is a former nationally ranked player from the University of Colorado. Slamecka is an accountant now.

Schwartz, 55, is a longtime Butler school teacher and is ranked No. 1 among tennis players his age in Pennsylvania.

Katy Trostle, a female tennis player at Butler Country Club, will be counted as one of the eight BCC male players.

"Katy is an extremely strong player and it will be interesting to see how she performs," Snyder said.

Dick Yoder, Chuck Lenns, Dave Kuhn, Greg Jerry, Jack Barkley - Jay's father - Erik Lenyk and Adam Kovalsky round out the men's division.

The eight women comprising that division are Caroline Jenner, Liz Giancola, Ann Gatty, Mary Jo Sylvia, Janet Platt (another Butler teacher), Marcie Mustello, Judy Barkley - Jay's mother - and Jenny Ivory.

Mixed doubles matches take place from 3 to 4:30 p.m. with men's doubles matches running from 4:30 to 6.

Admission is free. In the event of inclement weather, the tournament will be moved to the Lakevue Athletic Club in Valencia.
