Gold-medal performance
U.S. gymnast Carly Patterson is embraced by her coach, Evgeny Marchenko, after winning the gold medal Thursday in the women's gymnastics all-around final at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. The 16-year-old is the first U.S. woman to hold the title since Mary Lou Retton took the gold in the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. Svetlana Khorkina of Russia took the silver medal and Zhang Nan of China got the bronze. Patterson's victory gave the United States a sweep of the gymnastic all-around titles – Paul Hamm became the first man to win Olympic gold Wednesday.
