LOS ANGELES - The Los Angeles Dodgers acquired reliever Scott Stewart from Cleveland, one day after finding out that setup man Darren Dreifort may be lost for the season.

The NL West leaders sent a player to be named or cash to the Indians for Stewart.

Stewart was 0-2 with a 7.24 ERA in 23 games with the Indians this season. The left-hander was sent down to Triple-A Buffalo in early July.

PHILADELPHIA - Andy Pettitte's lost season came to an end when the Houston Astros announced the pitcher would have surgery on his troublesome left elbow next week.Pettitte was put on the 15-day disabled list for the third time this season. Dr. James Andrews will do the surgery next Tuesday to repair a torn flexor tendon.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - In an attempt to control escalating costs and enhance racing, NASCAR announced a new gear rule for the Nextel Cup, Busch Series and Craftsman Truck Series.The rule, which will take effect with the 2005 season, will restrict teams to gear ratios determined by NASCAR in an effort to limit maximum engine revolutions per minute.NASCAR president Mike Helton told The Associated Press that the rule is expected to reduce team costs tied to engine research and development.

KINGSTON, Jamaica - Brian Ching scored in the 89th minute to help the United States tie Jamaica 1-1 in a World Cup regional semifinal qualifying game.Cobi Jones crossed into the penalty box in the 89th minute. Landon Donovan settled the ball and Ching sent a right-footed shot into the net.The Americans have never lost to the Jamaicans, and at Kingston's National Stadium, known as "The Office," they have produced four ties in qualifiers.

WASHINGTON - Lleyton Hewitt moved into the quarterfinals of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Alejandro Falla.Hewitt, who has dropped just eight games in two matches, faces seventh-seeded Cyril Saulnier in the next round. Saulnier advanced with a 6-3, 7-6 (2) win over Gilles Elseneer.Also, fourth-seeded Robby Ginepri moved into the quarters with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 win over qualifier Harel Levy. Ginepri next plays Raemon Slutier, who beat Alberto Martin 7-6 (4), 5-7, 7-6 (2).

MASON, Ohio - Third-seeded Amy Frazier capitalized on 35 unforced errors and beat Mashona Washington 6-4, 6-3 to advance to the quarterfinals of the Western and Southern Women's Open.In other matches, Flavia Pennetta, coming off her first WTA Tour victory at the Idea Prokom Open in Poland, advanced with a 6-7 (6), 7-6 (3), 7-5 win over Teryn Ashley in a match that lasted 2 hours, 36 minutes.
