Harris frustrated by Pitt's injury count
PITTSBURGH - University of Pittsburgh coach Walt Harris grew irritated as his injury list steadily rose into double-figures late into Wednesday afternoon's practice.
"It's frustrating, and I'm frustrated," Harris said. "You try to get better as a football team and as a football player, but when you've got so many guys out it makes it hard."
Sophomore Greg Lee, the player counted on to pick up the slack at wideout after Larry Fitzgerald moved on to the NFL, missed his second straight day with a hamstring problem. The other experienced receivers, Terrell Allen (wrist) and Princell Brockenbrough (knee surgery), already are out for the season.
Clint Session, a sophomore expected to start at middle linebacker, was out Wednesday with a headache. Senior Tyrone Gilliard, the No. 1 strong safety, pulled up lame midway through practice. Starting offensive guard John Simonitis suffered an apparent leg injury during a contact drill, while backup end Andy Alleman and guard Charles Spencer were out with undisclosed problems.
"I think the guys that practiced, practiced pretty good," Harris said. "The problem is that we had to cut the time in practice, because we have a lot of guys hurt, so the other guys have to practice more and they get more susceptible to injury. It's a trickle-down effect, a domino effect."
Backup tailback Marcus Furman (hip) has missed nearly the entire camp, while fullback Justin Acierno, defensive lineman Michael Hearn, and wideouts Kelvin Chandler, Tommy Kail, Brandon Ballard and Larry Moore were recent additions to the injured list.
With the team's first full intrasquad Saturday afternoon, Pitt might have some trouble getting enough players on the field.
"We base all of it on what our trainers and doctors say about when a guy can come back," Harris said. "But we need to scrimmage. That's how the game's played, and we're young. So, we need to scrimmage, but if we don't get guys out there practicing we can't do anything."
Pitt's training camp at the UPMC Sports Complex continues until Aug. 28, and then the Panthers begin preparation for the season-opener against South Florida on Sept. 6 in Tampa, Fla.
