Cheer:
Steam shows aren't unique to Butler County. There are several shows in other counties in Western Pennsylvania.
But the Portersville Steam Show held from Aug. 5 through 8 at the Portersville Steam Show grounds on Route 19 again gave visitors a look into the past, under the direction of dedicated people committed to preserving a piece of the region's history. They deserve praise for their dedication to the effort.
This year was the show's 42nd annual event held by the Northwest Pennsylvania Steam Engine and Old Equipment Association, which was founded in 1963.
Over the years, in addition to the steam displays, there has evolved a growing popularity of antique law tractors. The interests of members also have branched out to include vintage cars, small gas engines, oil field equipment and industrial and household items - adding to the diversity of the show.
People who missed this year's event should mark down a reminder for themselves for August 2005. Meanwhile, people who might wish to join the Northwest Pennsylvania Steam Engine and Old Equipment Association should call Tom Downing at 724-752-1845.
There are numerous events and points of interest in Butler County. The Portersville show can provide hours of fun as well as a lesson in the region's history.
For schoolchildren, the show certainly can provide valuable fodder for their "What I Did This Summer" compositions when they return to classes.
