Murray qualifies for triathlon
Tom Murray of Zelienople qualified for the for the Ironman Triathlon World Championship with his performance in Wednesday's regional event.
Murray, 64, grabbed the second of two slots in the 60-to-64 age bracket with a time of 12 hours, 4 minutes at the Lake Placid Qualifier in New York.. There were 24 in his age group and 2,200 athletes took part in the event.
The World Championship, which will be held Oct. 16 in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, consists of a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride a and 26.2-mile run.
This year will mark Murray's seventh Ironman in Hawaii, having qualified and completed the event in 1987, 1992, 1995, 1996, 1997 and 2002.
