SRU athletes receive honors
Headed by women's track and field national champion Karyn McCready, 110 Slippery Rock University athletes received scholar athlete awards from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.
McCready won the national title in the javelin, was a first-time CoSIDA Academic All-America selection and the 2003-04 PSAC Female Scholar Athlete of the Year.
The 110 honorees represent almost 25 percent of the 450 student athletes at The Rock. Scholar-athlete status requires a grade point average of 3.25 or higher.
Area athletes on SRU's scholar-athlete list include Jenna Gostkowski of Cranberry Township, Jennifer Hutchinson of Butler, Gwen Oberlin, Trent Berner and Bill Jordan of Grove City, Kim Otte of Valencia, Katrina Peters of Evans City, Carey Stenger of Zelienople, Scott Rice and Adam Rose of Slippery Rock.
Three Butler County golfers will compete in the 2004 Kings/Pepsi/Tri-State PGA Junior Player of the Year Championship Wednesday at Diamond Run Golf Club in Sewickley.Golfers finishing among the top 10 in their respective age groups in series points during the season qualify for the tournament.Jacob Pleczkowski of Valencia is seventh in points in the boys age 17-and-18 division, Cameron Peterson of Grove City is second in the boys 15-and-16 division and Lauren Torso of Zelienople is second in the girls 17-and-18 division.
