Knapp runner-up at Pa. Amateur

Par wasn't good enough for Sean Knapp during the final round of the Pennsylvania Amateur Golf Championship Wednesday at Fox Chapel Golf Club.

A longtime member of St. Jude Golf Club in Chicora, Knapp entered the final round of the 54-hole event trailing 19-year-old Blaine Peffley of Lebanon Country Club by one stroke.

While Knapp shot an even-par 70 during the final round, Peffley fired a 3-under par 67, collecting birdies on four of the last five holes to defeat runner-up Knapp by four strokes.

Peffley had 15 birdies in the tournament overall and was 10-under par for the event, shooting rounds of 68, 65 and 67.

Knapp compiled 10 birdies overall and carded rounds of 67, 69, 69.

Chip Zimmerman of Pittsburgh Field Club entered Wednesday with the lead, but followed up his first-round 65 with rounds of 67 and 73 to tie Arnold Cuttrell of Totteridge Golf Club for third, five strokes off the pace.

Jon Pratkanis of Butler, representing Kittanning Country Club, tied for 31st while finishing 11-over par. He had nine birdies in the tournament but suffered three double-bogeys and a triple-bogey.

Pratkanis shot an 82 in the Wednesday morning round, getting his triple-bogey on the par-4, 475-yard No. 8 hole.

Ben Smith of Fox Chapel Golf Club, grandson of Vernon L. Wise Jr. of Penn Township, tied for 33rd. He carded rounds of 72, 74 and 76 and finished 12-over par with five birdies.

Fox Chapel Golf Club hosted the Pennsylvania Amateur Championship for the seventh time, but it was the first time since 1992.

Next year's event will be held at Huntingdon Valley Country Club, near Philadelphia.
