County golfers compete at Pennsylvania Amateur Championship
Chip Zimmerman of Pittsburgh Field Club fired a five-under 65 to hold a two-shot lead over 1997 champion Sean Knapp in the first round of the Pennsylvania Amateur Championship at Fox Chapel Golf Club Tuesday.
Zimmerman recorded five birdies and no bogeys to surge into the lead.
Knapp, of Longue Vue Club, was the early clubhouse leader after he two-putted the ninth green and posted a three-under par 67 shortly after play resumed Tuesday morning.
He had finished 17 holes Monday before rain postponed action. Knapp's 67 ties him with Arnold K. Cutrell of Totteridge Golf Course.
At the time Monday, 60 players were still on the course while 66 others had yet to tee off.
Those players began their round at 11 a.m. Tuesday.
Butler's Jon Pratkanis of Kittanning Country Club is tied in ninth place with a 35-35-70 with six other golfers.
Ben Smith of Fox Chapel Golf Club, grandson of Vernon L. Wise Jr. of Penn Township, carded a 35-37-72 to advance as well.
In all, 53 players moved on to today's second round, as 73 was the cutoff mark. The second round was scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m. today and the third round at 12:45 p.m.
Robert Lent of Butler Country Club (34-40-74), Rob Voltz of St. Jude Country Club (35-40-75) and Doug Stadler of Treesdale Golf and Country Club (39-40-79) also competed but missed the cut.
