'Band of Brothers' leading Baynes in Prep League
It's hard to pinpoint which aspect is more impressive for the Baynes baseball team this season.
On the one hand, the team, which plays in the Butler Prep League, went undefeated in the regular season and is currently 22-0 heading into its semifinal playoff game tonight against Heckett's.
On the other hand, the team sports five sets of brothers out of the 14 players on the roster.
The league, which is comprised of five squads, is for players ages 16 to 23.
"With the age differences with the brothers, we've never had that many on the same team," said Aaron Rekich, who plays third base and also pitches for the team.
"It's a great feeling. If your brother's on the same field, you'd know where he'd be before he was even there," he added.
"I drafted these boys and put this team together," said Baynes manager Tom Cooksey. "They've played well together. I think it's such a big advantage. You could play them anywhere on the field."
Rekich is joined by his brother, Joe, who plays shortstop and is also a member of the Butler Township American Legion team that is playing in the Region 7 playoffs this week.
Jesse Coddington (catcher-shortstop) and Adam Coddington (center fielder), Dave Clark (designated hitter-catcher) and Derrick Clark (reserve player), Mike Wilbert (outfielder) and Dan Wilbert (right fielder) and Chad Savannah (second baseman) and Cory Savannah (reserve player) make up the other brother combinations.
Rounding out the squad is Ron Deal (LF-P), Josh Stonebraker (P-1B-3B), Sara Fredley (1B-RF) and Mike Pintell (P-Utility).
"It had been the Coddingtons and the Clarks last year, and two years ago it was the Coddingtons and the Rekichs," said Aaron Rekich.
"That had been the most since I've been here," he added.
The Coddingtons bat 1-2 in the order and are referred to as the Coddington Connection."
"Dave is a Baynes fanatic," said Joe Rekich. "He's been with the club since he was old enough to play, and Chad is the emotional leader of the team."
It seemed apparent early in the season that the team, which has outscored its opponents 208-70 through 22 games, could be very strong.
"We knew at practice we had a good team. We just didn't know how good," said Aaron Rekich. "From the get-go, everyone seemed gung-ho about the team. Anyone would play at any position."
"We knew after our first practice we had a good team," echoed Joe Rekich. "We didn't figure 20-0 (regular season).
"Once we got past 12-0, we'd say '13-0 sounds good' and so on. We were hoping for it," he added.
The team has a blend of youth and experience. They have one player that is 23 years old (Deal), one at 22 (Chad Savannah), three at 21, three at 20 and at least one player between the ages 16 and 19. Derrick Clark, 16, is the youngest.
The team defeated Texas Roadhouse in the first round of the playoffs and Iron Mountain in the second round Sunday and need to get past Heckett's to reach the finals.
"This team plays together, plays as a team" said Cooksey. "Hopefully, we can stay in the winning bracket. We play in a very tough league."
