Gagne save streak ended at 84

LOS ANGELES - Eric Gagne's major league-record streak of 84 consecutive saves ended Monday night when he blew a 5-3 lead for the Los Angeles Dodgers against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Chad Tracy's RBI single in the ninth inning tied the score after pinch-hitter Luis Gonzalez's RBI double. Tracy's single went past the glove of a diving first baseman Olmedo Saenz, ending Gagne's streak a day after he was picked for his third All-Star game in three years.

Realizing that Gagne's streak was over, the crowd at Dodger Stadium gave Gagne a standing ovation as he stood on the mound with his head down.

Gagne, who entered at the start of the inning, retired the next two batters and got another standing ovation on his way to the dugout, before taking a curtain call to wilder cheers.

He had not blown a save chance since Aug. 26, 2002, also against the Diamondbacks. During the streak, he blew a save in the 2003 All-Star game when he allowed a home run to the Texas Rangers' Hank Blalock, but that exhibition game didn't count in the statistics.

Gagne's record was 30 more than the previous mark of 54, set by Tom Gordon for Boston from April 19, 1998 to June 5, 1999.

The Montreal native set the mark Sept. 2 against Houston, part of his perfect 55-save season last year. He has 21 this season.

Gagne got the closer's job in early 2002. That season, the Dodgers came out of spring training with their closer situation far from settled.

But manger Jim Tracy picked right with Gagne, a middling starter and reliever for the Dodgers before taking over the closer's role and posting 52 saves.
