NEW YORK - Roger Clemens was picked for his first NL All-Star team and Mike Piazza was elected by fans to start the July 13 game in Houston.
Clemens, a nine-time All-Star in the American League, beaned Piazza in July 2000. In Game 2 of the World Series that October, he threw the jagged barrel of a shattered bat in the direction of Piazza.
Barry Bonds, Ken Griffey Jr. and Sammy Sosa were elected to start in the NL outfield, the first time three players with 500 home runs will start.
Six Yankees players were picked, including Derek Jeter, Jason Giambi and Alex Rodriguez in the infield. They will be joined by former Yankee Alfonso Soriano, who received the most votes in either league, 3.47 million.
SAN FRANCISCO - Barry Bonds became baseball's all-time walks leader, breaking Rickey Henderson's major league record when he drew his 2,191st from Oakland reliever Chad Bradford in the eighth inning of the Giants' 9-6 loss.The San Francisco slugger had an 0-2 count then drew four straight balls from Bradford for his second walk of the game. Mark Mulder walked Bonds in the sixth.Bonds already has 121 walks in the Giants' first 82 games - including 63 intentional passes.
SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. - Meg Mallon won the Women's Open with a 6-under 65, the lowest final round by a champion in the 59-year history of the tournament.Mallon finished at 10-under 274 for a two-shot victory over Annika Sorenstam at Orchards Golf Club. Mallon's 13-year gap between Women's Open wins is the largest in history.Kelly Robbins finished third. Jennifer Rosales, who started the final round with a three-shot lead, finished fourth.Michelle Wie and 17-year-old Paula Creamer tied for low amateur at 1-over 285.
LEMONT, Ill. - Stephen Ames won his first career PGA Tour victory at the Western Open, finishing at 10-under 274 and beating Steve Lowery by two strokes.Luke Donald and Mark Hensby were three strokes back. Stuart Appleby and Geoff Ogilvy were four shots behind Ames in fifth.Tiger Woods finished tied for seventh.
MAGNY COURS, France - Michael Schumacher won the French Grand Prix for his ninth victory in 10 Formula One races this season.Fernando Alonso of Spain was runner-up, 8.3 seconds behind.Schumacher's Brazilian teammate Rubens Barrichello, despite starting from the 10th position, placed third.
