CHICAGO - The Chicago White Sox acquired All-Star pitcher Freddy Garcia from the Seattle Mariners on Sunday, bolstering their rotation for the AL Central race.
The White Sox gave up young catcher Miguel Olivo, top prospect Jeremy Reed and minor league infielder Michael Morse in the trade. Chicago also gets catcher Ben Davis and cash from the Mariners.
CLEVELAND - Aaron Boone signed a two-year contract with an option for 2006 with the Cleveland Indians on Saturday.Boone, whose 11th-inning homer in Game 7 of the 2003 ALCS put the New York Yankees in the World Series, hasn't played since injuring his left knee during a pickup basketball game in January.
MADISON, Ill. - Drag racer Darrell Russell died Sunday after his car broke up while traveling about 300 mph and burst into flames during a Top Fuel race at Gateway International Raceway.Russell had crossed the finish line on the quarter-mile strip and deployed his parachute when his dragster came apart in the second round of eliminations at the Sears Craftsman NHRA Nationals.The car rolled to a halt near a guard wall, and the fire was quickly put out.The 35-year-old from Hockley, Texas, was unconscious when he was cut from the wreckage, immobilized with a brace and placed on a backboard. He was taken by helicopter to the St. Louis University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead about two hours later.
RALEIGH, N.C. - The Ottawa Senators traded goaltender Patrick Lalime to the St. Louis Blues on Sunday for a conditional fourth-round pick in the 2005 NHL draft.Lalime was 25-23-7 in 57 games last season, with a goals-against average of 2.29.
POTOMAC, Md. - Adam Scott held off Charles Howell III for a four-shot victory Sunday at the Booz Allen Classic.Scott closed with a 68 for a 21-under-par 263 total.
CONCORD, Mass. - Craig Stadler shot an 8-under 64 Sunday to win the Bank of America Championship for a victory on the Champions Tour - and then hustled into the scorer's trailer to watch his son Kevin earn his first win on the minor league Nationwide Tour.Stadler, 51, took the lead with a birdie on the 13th hole, but he was more concerned with how Kevin was doing at the Lake Erie Charity Classic. After sinking a birdie on the 18th hole to finish at 15-under 201, the 1982 Masters champion watched as his 24-year-old son won on the fourth playoff hole.The only other time a father and son have won PGA-sponsored events on the same day was when David Duval won The Players Championship on March 28, 1999, and his father, Bob, won the Emerald Coast Classic on the senior circuit.
