The 29th annual Butler Road Race, presented by Butler Memorial Hospital, will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday in front of the Butler County Courthouse.
The race provides academic scholarships to graduating cross county runners from A-C Valley, Butler, Freeport, Karns City, Knoch, Mars, Moniteau, Seneca Valley and Slippery Rock high schools.
In the 11 years since the race has turned its focus to scholarships, 331 scholarships have been given totaling $186,350.
There will be a 5-mile race and a 2K run/health walk. The 5-mile record holders are Steve Parker (24 minutes, 48 seconds) and Tammy Slusser (29:44).
Along with the awards ceremony, there will be refreshments, door prizes and vendors selling apparel. Families of four or more that enter will receive a $25 dining certificate to the Texas Roadhouse at Clearview Mall.
Packet pickup will be held at the Family Services of BMH, 216 N. Washington St. from 4 to 6 p.m. today and from 7:30 to 8:50 a.m. Saturday at Diamond Park.
Cost is $16 for ages 17 to 59 and $10 for ages 16 and under and 60 and over. Signups will be taken at Family Services both days as well.
Chicago Cubs pitcher Matt Clement (7-6) allowed four runs and seven hits in six innings, falling to 3-1 this season against the Cardinals after St. Louis' 4-0 win Thursday.The Butler native surrendered seven hits and one walk and strock out five in six innings of work. Rey Ordonez's error on a potential double-play ball in the fourth led to three unearned runs.Clement is 0-2 in his last three starts despite a 1.80 ERA during that span. His last victory was June 8 over the Cardinals in Chicago.
Slippery Rock University track and field athlete Karyn McCready received the PSAC Female Scholar Athlete of the Year award.The three-time All-America in the javelin - including a national title this year - set the conference mark with a throw of 164 feet in the finals.She had a 3.92 GPA as a health and physical education major. She recently was named CoSIDA Academic All-America.
Lauren Torso, 17, of Zelienople won the girls 17-and-18 division at the Tri-State PGA Junior Golf Tournament at Wanango County Club in Reno, Pa. Thursday.Torso carded a 48-43-91.
Sharon Abbott registered a hole-in-one at Stoughton Acres Wednesday, using a 7-iron on the 103-yard No. 3 hole.
