Butler graduate Melanie Buczko, a freshman pole vaulter at Bucknell University, is competing in the USA Track and Field Junior Outdoor Championships this weekend in College Station, Texas.
The pole vault competition is at 3:45 p.m. Sunday. Buczko finished 11th at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships earlier this month and holds the Bucknell record in the pole vault at 13 feet, 3½ inches.
Adam Etzel, 10, of Butler placed third in the superstock division (ages 8 through 17) of the fifth annual Soap Box Derby qualifier at Scotland Meadows Park in New Castle Saturday.The New Castle qualifier is for competitors from Beaver, Butler, Lawrence and Mercer counties.

Seneca Valley graduate Brian Stoecklein had three singles, two runs scored and an RBI Tuesday in the Washington Wild Things' 19-11 Frontier League victory over Windy City.The Wild Things had 19 hits in the game. Stoecklein batted second and played second base.
Robert Lent of Butler Country Club and Jon Pratkanis of Kittanning Country Club have qualified for the Pennsylvania Amateur Golf Championship.Butler resident Pratkanis carded a 37-38-75 to finish five strokes off the lead at the West Qualifier held Tuesday at Cedarbrook Golf Course. Lent recorded a 36-41-77 to join Pratkanis as one of 20 qualifiers from the 63-golfer field.
