Foxburg Pro-Am avoids bad weather

Sometimes a blown forecast can be a good thing.

That was the case Sunday at the Foxburg Country Club in Clarion County.

"They were calling for bad weather, some thunderstorms," said Glenn Ahrens, who is on the Board of Directors of the American Golf Hall of Fame, also in Foxburg. "But it turned out to be a terrific day."

The nice weather allowed the 40th annual Pro-Am Tournament to be played out, with a team of five headed by Stone Crest Golf Course pro Harry Toscano beating out 11 other teams with a finish of 18 under par.

Winning team members included Denny Rhodes, Jerry Marron, Bert Snyder and Ted Marron.

Each teams' top two scores on each hole were counted toward its final score.

"The course was in excellent shape," said Ahrens. "The pin placements were unbelievably tough. Many holes were won or lost on the greens."

Treesdale Country Club pro Joe Boros shot a round low of 66, with John Aubrey, Sr. close behind with a 68.

With the course being just nine holes, tee boxes were changed for the back nine.

"It really creates some holes that play totally different from the front nine," said Ahrens.

The course has been open since 1887, making it the oldest course in the United States still in use today.

For this reason, the golf course was proclaimed the home of the American Golf Hall of Fame with a signed charter from the U.S. Congress on June 28, 1954.

A three-story museum is also on the grounds and contains many pieces of interesting and historic memorabilia.

Included are golf clubs from as early as the 1770s and early golf balls filled with feathers, among other pieces from the game's past.

Each participant in the Pro-Am paid a fee of $125, which is used in the upkeep of the building and grounds.

The museum is open from April through November from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. Admission is free, though donations are appreciated.

The 33rd Annual Muntz Open, hosted by Ahrens, will be held in Foxburg August 23.

Money from this event is always given to a Children's Hospital in the area.
