Melanie Buczko, a freshman pole vaulter on the Bucknell University women's track and field team, placed 11th at the NCAA Division Track and Field Championships in Austin, Texas, over the weekend.

Buczko, a graduate of Butler, cleared 13 feet, 1½ inches.

SRU women's track-and-field standout Karyn McCready and head coach John Papa were honored Monday by the PSAC.McCready, a native of Johnstown, was named the conference's Female Track and Field Athlete of the Year in recognition of her winning the NCAA Division II national championship and a third successive PSAC title in the javelin.For the ninth time in his career, Papa was selected as the conference's Women's Track and Field Coach of the Year after leading The Rock to a second straight league title.Papa also was named the U.S. Track Coaches Association's East Region Coach of the Year earlier this month.McCready set a PSAC record with her national-championship throw of 164 feet and put herself in line for a possible berth in the Olympic Trials.She also won the college division of the Penn Relays in the event.

Seneca Valley grad Brian Stoecklein had a double, two singles, two RBI and scored a run in the Washington Wild Thing's 6-0 victory over Kalamazoo in the first game of a doubleheader Monday.

Two Butler residents have advanced to the Beast of the East Skateboarding Championships based on their performances at a district competition Sunday.Mike McGrady placed fourth and Kyle Conley eighth in the advanced division to qualify. Bill Zavidny just missed the cut, placing ninth in the intermediate division.

Zach Jackson, a junior pitcher on the Texas A&M baseball team, and teammate Parker Dillon were awarded the Marion Pugh Spirit Award.Jackson, a graduate of Seneca Valley, started a game in every weekend series this season and was a catalyst for the Aggies' team unity and chemistry.Jackson, who finished the season with a 10-7 record and 3.58 ERA, was selected 32nd overall by the Toronto Blue Jays in the recent amateur draft.

Abby Moose, a member of the Grove City College women's basketball team, was selected to the U.S. Deaflympics team that will compete in the 20th Summer Deaflympics in Melbourne, Australia, Jan. 6 to 15.A 5-foot-6 guard, Moose, who will be a senior next season, is one of 12 hearing-impaired players that made the squad along with three alternates.Team members must have a hearing loss of 55 decibels or greater to be eligible. Moose has a hearing loss of 60 to 90 decibels.
