English rolls along in state tournament

Butler County bowlers are making their presence known in the 65th annual Pennsylvania State Bowling Association Tournament.

And Kevin English, 33, of Evans City is leading the way.

English became the second bowler to roll a perfect game in the tournament, which runs each weekend through June 20 at Family Bowlaway and Sherwood Lanes, when he notched a 300 during doubles competition last weekend at Family Bowlaway.

English's doubles partner was David Yost of Butler. The pair, who bowl together in the Automotive League at Bon-Aire, rank fifth in doubles scratch in the PSBA Tournament thus far.

English and his partner finished 10th in PSBA doubles during a tournament in the early 1990s.

"David and I have been bowling together in tournaments for a number of years now," English said. "But this is only the third time we've bowled in the state tournament."

English doesn't bowl in any other league, but carries a career-best 224 average this year. The 300 game was the sixth of his career.

His career high series is 798.

"I bowl in tournaments practically every weekend," English said. "That's how I stay sharp. I just got back from a tournament in Chicago last weekend."

English will join teammates David and Bill Yost, Tony Pizer and Gil Steighner in the PSBA team competition this weekend at Sherwood Lanes.

Other Butler County bowlers faring well so far in PSBA play include:

Chad Mowry of Butler, who rolled a 279-732 in singles last weekend. He ranks sixth in singles scratch.

Mowry, 27, participates in the state tournament annually, "but I've never had much success there," he said.

He bowls in three leagues a week during the season - Imperial, City and the Butler County Traveling Men's League - and averaged a personal-best 219 this year.

Mowry owns two 300 games in his career and bowled a personal-high series of 796 in 1998.

"Ninety percent of the time, you're busy traveling around for this tournament and it's hard to focus on bowling," he said. "Since it's here this year, I was really hoping to do well. I'm hoping a lot more local guys do well."

Jason Gonzalez ranks fourth in singles handicapped with a 779.

Glenn Beichner ranks seventh in all events scratch with a 2,000.

Zeili Lanes continues to rank second in team handicapped with a 3,329. The quintet of team captain Jerry Higley, Robert Leonberg, James Banyay, Bryan Yeck and Dave Yeck have held that spot since late April.

The Troy-Alan Chevrolet I team ranks fourth in team scratch with a 3,096.
