Slippery Rock University junior Brad Cieleski was recently named by his teammates as SRU's Wrestler of the Year.
Cieleski was 34-6 this season, won the PSAC championship and the NCAA Division I East Regional.
Teammate Jason Cardillo received the Hardest Worker Award and was the initial recipient of the Mike Shearer Guts Award. Shearer is a former Rock wrestler who died of cancer in 1982.
Freshman Ben Young won the Best Newcomer Award while Ben Watson won the Most Improved Wrestler Award and David Sachs had the highest grade point average on the team at 4.0.
Maureen Hearn and Josh Barthlow recently received the Mary Ann Napora and Steve Napora Memorial Awards, respectively, for academic excellence among Butler swimmers at the Butler High School swimming and diving team banquet.Hearn also won the Most Dedicated Diver Award for girls and Barthlow was Most Valuable Swimmer on the boys team.Other diving awards included Matt Schnur (most dedicated-boys), Jess Schnur (top performer-girls) and Travis Shingleton (top performer-boys).Other swimming awards were Sarah Clouse (Tough as Nails Award), Ellen Crummy (Coaches Award), Molly Evans (Most Valuable), Ellen Pullekines (Hustle Award) and Jessica Vernon (Spirit Stick) on the girls side, Eric Clouse (Hustle Award) for the boys.
NEW YORK - In one of the more bizarre first hours in recent NFL draft history, Eli Manning was taken with the first pick by the San Diego Chargers on Saturday, for whom he later announced he wouldn't play.An hour later, the Giants obtained him for another quarterback, Philip Rivers, who they had taken with the fourth overall pick.Meanwhile, the rest of the draft went on around that soap opera.With the second pick, Oakland took offensive tackle Robert Gallery of Iowa and with the third, Arizona chose wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald of Pittsburgh, a ball boy for Cardinals coach Dennis Green when Green coached in Minnesota.Not only did the Chargers get Rivers, who completed 72 percent of his passes last season at North Carolina State, but they also got the Giants' third-round pick this year and their first and fifth next season.
TALLADEGA, Ala. - Jeff Gordon seized the lead from Dale Earnhardt Jr. with six laps remaining and barely beat him in a controversial finish Sunday at Talladega Superspeedway.With Earnhardt making a strong move to pass for the lead coming off turn four on lap 184 of the 188-lap Aaron's 499, rookie Brian Vickers and Casey Mears collided, sending Vickers sliding and bringing out the 11th caution flag of the race.Under NASCAR's rule change from last fall, freezing the field when the yellow comes out rather than letting the competitors race to the flagstand, Gordon got his first Nextel Cup victory of the season.At first, Earnhardt was posted in front, but replays appeared to show Gordon's No. 24 Chevrolet was about three-quarters of a car length ahead of Earnhardt's No. 8 Monte Carlo when the caution waved.
SAVANNAH, Ga. - Recovering from a back injury that kept him off the Champions Tour for four weeks, Hale Irwin hung on to beat Gil Morgan and Gary Koch by a stroke Sunday in the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf.Irwin closed with a 1-under 71 for an 11-under 205 total on The Club at Savannah Harbor, an island layout in the middle of the Savannah River. Morgan bogeyed the final hole for a 73, and Koch parred the final five holes for 71.
HUMBLE, Texas - Vijay Singh chipped in for eagle just before play was suspended to move into a tie for the lead in the rain-delayed Houston Open on Sunday.Singh, the 2002 winner, matched John Huston and Joe Ogilvie at 7 under when play was halted at the Redstone Golf Club. PGA Tour officials hoped to complete all 72 holes Monday.Only 15 players completed the third round. Singh had six holes left, and Huston and Ogilvie each had three to play.
LOS ANGELES - Vitali Klitschko stopped Corrie Sanders late in the eighth round Saturday night to win the WBC title vacated by the retirement of Lennox Lewis.
