Youth turkey hunt set

HARRISBURG - Junior hunting license holders will get the chance to participate in Pennsylvania's first youth spring gobbler season on April 24.

This special one-day season will open one week before the May 1 start of the statewide general spring gobbler season.

"This special youth hunting day should provide an unparalleled chance to call in and take a big gobbler," said Lori Richardson, the Pennsylvania Game Commission public outreach coordinator.

Youngsters who participate in the new youth spring gobbler season are required to have a junior hunting license. Juniors under 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. The adult cannot carry a sporting arm.

Accompanying adults can only provide guidance, such as calling or scouting.

All other hunting regulations are the same as those for the general spring gobbler season, including the hunting hours of one-half hour before sunrise until noon and only bearded turkeys can be taken.

"We believe the new season promotes increased 'together time' for parents and children, and will inspire many veteran turkey hunters to take a young person afield to experience the rewards of this exciting activity," Richardson said.
