John Aubrey Sr. of Aubrey's Dubbs Dred Golf Course in Butler led his four-man squad to a second-place finish at the Tri-State Section PGA Pro-3 Amateur Monday at South Hills Country Club.
Aubrey's quartet, which included amateurs Paul McFarlane, Harry Roth and Phil Loverick Sr., carded a 61, one stroke behind the foursome of Dirk Hartman of Blackhawk Golf Course, and amateurs Dick DeBacco, Steve Kisio and Sam Cantanzarite.
Slippery Rock University freshman women's track and field standout Raisa Weiss and sophomore women's tennis player Ashley Michaux are among the PSAC Athletes of the Week.Weiss set a school record with a pole vault of 11 feet, 6 inches in winning the PSAC West Challenge. Her effort was the best recorded by a PSAC pole vaulter this spring.Michaux won all three of her singles and doubles matches last week, outscoring her opponents at No. 2 singles 36-5. She paired with Jessica Bungo at No. 1 doubles.
Rock Solid, a 15-under AAU girls basketball team involving area players, finished second last weekend in the 17-and-under division of the Solon (Ohio) Cage Classic.The team lost the championship game to Whitmer Academy of Akron, Ohio, 60-54.Rock Solid team members were all-tournament players Amy Achesinski, Jence Rhoads and Jaleesa Sams, along with Megan Spangler, Julie Ehrman, Casey McCaffrey, Abby Basta, Julie Molloy, Sheena Aden and Nicole Cherry.
Slippery Rock High School graduate Greg Grupp, a senior on the Grove City College baseball team, was named President's Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week.Grupp batted .667 (8-for-12) with two doubles, a home run, four runs scored and five RBI in three games. He is on an eight-game hitting streak and leads the team with a .424 batting average, .661 slugging percentage and .426 on-base percentage.
