MILWAUKEE - Houston Astros pitcher Andy Pettitte was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a strained left elbow.
Pettitte, signed to a three-year, $31.5-million free-agent contract in December after spending nine years with the New York Yankees, injured the elbow while trying to check his swing in his first start on Tuesday against San Francisco.
An MRI on Thursday revealed inflammation in the elbow and a strain in his flexor tendon, according to the Astros.
The move was made retroactive to Pettitte's last start.
DELRAY BEACH, Fla. - Andy Roddick beat Jonas Bjorkman in straight sets Sunday to clinch a U.S. victory over Sweden in the Davis Cup quarterfinals.Roddick came from behind to take a grueling first set, then wore down a weary Bjorkman to win 7-6 (3), 6-4, 6-0, giving the Americans an insurmountable 3-1 lead in the best-of-five match.The Americans will host a semifinal Sept. 24-26 against Belarus, which beat Argentina.The other Davis Cup semifinal will be between Spain and France. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Broadcaster Pat Summerall received a liver transplant Saturday and was recovering in an intensive care unit, a hospital spokeswoman said.The 73-year-old former NFL kicker had been on the waiting list at St. Luke's Hospital since April 2.Transplant surgeon Jeffrey Steers said the 2 1/2-hour surgery was completed without complications.Summerall was in stable condition after the transplant, hospital spokeswoman Evelyn Tovar said.The broadcaster had been flown by air ambulance to the Mayo Clinic-owned hospital in Jacksonville from Dallas.
