Grove City College's Andrew Geisler was named the Presidents Athletic Conference's Tennis Player of the Week.
Geisler, a junior from Bradford, was 6-0 last week - 3-0 at No. 5 singles and at No. 3 doubles - for Grove City, which defeated Thiel, Frostburg State (Md.) and Hartwick.
Sean Gallagher, a senior member of the Westminster College men's track team, placed second in the 10,000 meters with a time of 34 minutes, 33 seconds at the Titan Invitational last weekend.Gallagher is a graduate of Mars High School.
Slippery Rock University assistant soccer coach Kevin Wilhelm was named head men's and women's coach at Thiel College.Wilhelm, a graduate of SRU who earned conference all-star honors and was a member of the 1994 WPISC championship team, also played at Gannon and was a director of coaching for Northern Steel boys program, as well as a coach for the PA West Olympic Development programs.
Butler senior Josh Barthlow placed third in the 100-yard backstroke Monday at the YMCA national swim meet in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.He swam the event in 50.72 seconds. Barthlow also finished third in the 100-yard backstroke preliminaries.
Alyssa Smaldino of Penn Township, a freshman on the Shady Side Academy swim team, was voted most improved swimmer by her teammates this year.Smaldino improved from 2 minutes, 39 seconds in the 200-yard individual medley to 2:31.4 this year, and from 1:21.0 to 1:16.53 in the 100 breaststroke.After beginning the season 0-3, Shady Side finished with nine wins, won the Section 7 title and finished second in WPIAL Class AA.
