Morozov goal lifts Penguins to overtime win

PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh Penguins are learning some very valuable lessons these days.

After enduring an 18-game winless streak and an NHL-record 14-game home losing streak earlier this season, the Penguins are maintaining their composure, getting timely saves and big power-play goals.

All of those were factors Sunday night. Aleksey Morozov scored twice, including a power-play goal with 7.9 seconds left in overtime gave Pittsburgh a 4-3 win over the New York Rangers.

"It's going to help a lot," Morozov said. "We have a lot of young guys, and they need to know what they're supposed to do to win games. It's hard work to win games."

Morozov, who also scored an overtime power-play goal to beat Carolina on Friday, set up two goals Sunday and has scored in each of his last five games and has 26 points in his last 26 games.

Jean-Sebastien made 31 saves for Pittsburgh, which is 9-3-2 in its past 14 games and hasn't lost in six straight home games.

The Penguins rebounded after Garth Murray and Bobby Holik scored 16 seconds apart early in the third period to give the Rangers a 3-2 lead.

"During that (winless) streak, our confidence would have been battered by something like that," Brooks Orpik said. "But on the bench today, the guys were still pretty loose. That's the difference between winning and losing."

The Rangers' winless streak reached six (0-3-0-3) in a game marked by bad penalties and the ejection of captain Mark Messier.

Jaromir Jagr was in the penalty box for roughing Dan Focht late in the third period, leading to Dick Tarnstrom's game-tying power-play goal with 1:15 left in regulation. Boris Mironov's hooking penalty away from the play with 30 seconds left in overtime led to Morozov's goal.

Lasse Pirjeta and Martin Strbak also scored for Pittsburgh, while Josh Green also scored for the Rangers.

Messier was ejected at 6:13 of the second period for spearing Strbak in front of the Pittsburgh net during a Rangers power play. Moments earlier, Strbak had cross-checked Messier near the bottom of the left circle in the Penguins' zone.

Messier refused comment on the play, but Strbak said he was surprised to get a stick from Messier in the abdomen.

"I respect Mark Messier. He's a great hockey player, a legend," said Strbak, who stayed down on the ice for some time but did not leave the game. "I don't know what happened. I just gave him a little push from behind. I can't understand why he reacted like he did."

Messier, also given an automatic game misconduct, cannot return to the New York lineup until a hearing is held on the penalty, according to league policy. The Rangers host the Penguins on Tuesday.

Pittsburgh coach Ed Olczyk called a timeout after the Rangers' quick goals, and it paid off.

"I wanted to re-emphasize what we wanted to do, not what we thought we were doing," said Olczyk. "I was just trying to stop the momentum the Rangers had, and even their first shifts after they scored, they had some good chances."

But Aubin stopped any further damage, and the Pittsburgh power play took it from there. It has produced a goal in 10 straight games, converting 16 of 37 chances in that span.

"We've worked hard to get out of the hole we were in," said Ric Jackman, who had two assists. "We're keeping the game simple, getting pucks in deep, forechecking. We're finding a way to win."

Notes:

Murray scored his first NHL goal. ... The Rangers scratched Jed Ortmeyer and Joel Bouchard. ... The Penguins have scored a power-play goal in 10 consecutive games, their longest such streak since Oct. 12-Nov. 2, 2002. ... New York's Jamie Lundmark has gone 41 games without a goal.
