Penguins shock Islanders in OT

UNIONDALE, N.Y. - The Pittsburgh Penguins went coast to coast to earn long-awaited victories. It was well worth the trip.

Ryan Malone scored 2:45 into overtime to give the Penguins a come-from-behind 3-2 victory Sunday over the Islanders.

Malone picked up a rebound of Alexei Morozov's shot and beat Garth Snow to give the Penguins their second overtime victory in three games after losing a team-record 18 straight (0-17-0-1).

"I just tried to go to the net," Malone said. "Ric (Jackman) made a good play and Mo batted the puck down nicely. I just got a lucky bounce."

The Penguins snapped their skid by beating Phoenix on Wednesday before losing at San Jose two nights later.

"We had a wicked travel schedule the last few days," Penguins coach Ed Olczyk said. "But they were playing their third game in less than four full days, so those circumstances offset each other."

Pittsburgh hasn't won in regulation since a victory at Philadelphia on Jan. 12. The Penguins have dropped an NHL-record 14 straight at home.

They ended their road trip 2-1 and will try to earn their first home victory since Dec. 29, when they play the Islanders again Tuesday. New York started that losing streak with a 6-1 win on New Year's Eve.

"We just thought we would show up and we'd win," Islanders defenseman Adrian Aucoin said of his team's latest effort. "We weren't skating, we weren't finishing our checks. It really wasn't what (Pittsburgh) was doing, but it was more of what we didn't do."

Jackman and Tomas Surovy also scored for the Penguins, who got 38 saves from Andy Chiodo.

"Give them credit," Islanders forward Jason Blake said. "Every time they play us, they work extremely hard."

Janne Niinimaa and Oleg Kvasha scored and Snow made 20 saves for the eighth-place Islanders, two points behind Montreal in the Eastern Conference playoff race.

"It's not good enough," Blake said. "I don't think we came out with enough urgency, for the most part."

The Penguins killed off four penalties in the first period, including a two-man disadvantage that lasted 1:28 and yielded only one shot. But Pittsburgh gave up a goal on the Islanders' last shot of the period, a drive from the right point by Niinimaa with 5.2 seconds left.

"The five-on-three penalty kill was definitely the key," Malone said. "But the best penalty killer has to be your goalie, and Andy was fantastic."

Surovy tied it 68 seconds into the middle period.

The Islanders took back the lead during Pittsburgh's first power-play chance. Chiodo stopped Kvasha's initial shot from the left side, but the Islanders forward knocked the rebound in at 12:14 for his career-best 14th goal.

Pittsburgh fared much better on its next power play, scoring four seconds into the advantage to tie it with 34.9 seconds left in the period.

"We were lucky to get a point," Islanders coach Steve Stirling said. "They outskated us and outworked us."

Notes: Islanders captain Michael Peca missed his

second straight game due to a gash on his leg, sustained Thursday when he was struck by a puck. ... New York was 7-2-3 in its previous 12 home games with both losses coming to the Rangers. ... The Islanders lead the season series 3-0-1-1 with one game remaining.
