Preston Park 5k a gem

More than 550 runners ran through the raindrops at last Saturday's Buffalo Creek Half Marathon.

For many, it was an emotional and physical challenge as we mourned and celebrated good friends and good times past on this annual fall foliage tour.

But not everyone can or wants to run 13.1 miles. This Sunday, Preston Park 5k offers a more accessible distance and a look at one of Butler's hidden gems.

Preston Park is the former home of Dr. Frank and Mrs. Jane Preston. The 88-acre grounds were home to Preston Laboratories, a glass research facility and predecessor to AGR International, now listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

The design of the property's landscaping reflects the Prestons' lifelong interest in environment and aesthetics.

Upon Jane Preston's death and bequest in 2008, Butler Township took ownership of the Eberhart Road property. In 2011, after much work by the township and volunteers, Preston Park opened to the public. It's open daily from dawn to dusk with walking and running trails including a dog trail, a catch-and-release fishing lake and an arboretum.

Anthony Stagno, Executive Director of Friends of Preston Park Foundation, began volunteering in 2010 after retirement as a teacher. He currently uses his teaching skills on guided tours of the park and is race director for the Preston Park 5k.

Anthony credits Lynn Patterson with the idea for the 5k. Her son, a cross country runner, had enjoyed running the scenic trails through the park. Anthony enlisted the help of Herb Cratty of Miles of Smiles Timing to bring the idea to life.

Cratty and Stagno laid out a 2-loop 5k course entirely on park grounds showcasing Preston Park's scenery. The course starts at the Arboretum, runs through a wide piney trail, along a gravel road, through a woodland and prairie and past the pond. It's not a level course, but as Anthony says, “It's Western Pennsylvania.”

Although the 5k is a trail run, it should be accessible for runners and walkers of all abilities. Most of the trails are wide and the park's Monday Morning Maintenance volunteer group has spray painted any tripping hazards on the wooded portion of trail. There are directional arrows and signage as well as volunteers helping runners stay on course.

Preston Park 5k welcomes runners, walkers and friendly dogs on leashes. Competitive runners will vie for $25 gift certificates awarded to first place male and female finishers. The top three age group finishers from 14 and under through 70+ earn wooden medals.

There will be water, bananas, breakfast bars and chocolates for runners and walkers after the race and all participants and spectators are eligible to win random drawing prizes. Cider and donuts will be available for purchase to benefit Butler High School student organizations. In keeping with the season, the first 100 participants and friends dressed in Halloween masks will receive a treat.

Race organizers hope for at least 100 participants for this first year and are already considering improvements for next year. That includes possibly holding a 5k and 10k since Preston Park is adjacent to Butler Township Park and its trails.

Preston Park 5k proceeds will further the Friends of Preston Park's mission to “preserve, protect and enhance Preston Park.” Future projects include purchase of equipment for events such as Movies in the Park, improving parking lot lighting, periodic dredging of the park's pond and construction of a visitors' center.
