Cops: Man flees on motorcycle

Allegedly tried to lie about it

A motorcyclist who allegedly fled from police Thursday night also tried to lie his way out of it by using his ankle monitor, according to police.

State police arrested Shane Bates, 29, of Center Township, and charged him with felony fleeing from officers as well as seven traffic violations they said occurred during the chase.

After his arraignment Sunday morning, he was placed in Butler County Prison on $75,000 bond.According to charging documents, police saw Bates riding along Mercer Road on his green Kawasaki motorcycle. Police said as they began following the motorcycle, which had crossed lines on the road, they also noticed the rider was wearing a backpack.“After making a right turn onto North Duffy Road, the motorcycle aggressively accelerated to a high rate of speed,” said the investigating trooper. “I activated my emergency lights and siren, at which point the motorcycle again accelerated.”Police estimated the motorcycle hit speeds greater than 70 mph in zones intended for 30-mph speeds, and there was at least one occasion in which the motorcycle nearly hit another vehicle.Police followed Bates until he pulled onto Cornell Drive, which leads into a neighborhood, including Oberlin Drive and Amherst Drive, neither of which has an outlet. Police waited at the entrance to the neighborhood until backup arrived, and then they asked neighbors if they knew the motorcycle.“I obtained information from witnesses informing me that there was only one 'non-Harley Davidson' motorcycle in the plan,” police said.Police said those interviews led them to Bates, who they found at his home on Amherst Drive. Police said he smelled of alcohol.According to police, Bates told troopers he was home as of 10:15 p.m., and that his motorcycle was in the shop.“Located behind the shed was a green Yamaha motorcycle that was still warm,” police said. “During a consent search of the residence, a book bag matching the one worn by the operator was also found.”Throughout the investigation, Bates maintained he was not the rider on the motorcycle, even at one point allegedly daring police to look into his electronic monitoring he was currently on. Bates has a case pending from April that involved charges of possessing a controlled substance.“Bates then pointed to his ankle monitor and told me to 'check the location data' with his parole officer,” police said.Police said the tracking information showed Bates at the intersection of Mercer and North Duffy roads at 10:44 p.m. and at the intersection of North Duffy Road and Cornell Drive one minute later, despite his claims to be home.“Of note, both times were 30 minutes after Bates alleges he had arrived at his residence,” police said.A preliminary arraignment for Bates is scheduled for June 22 before District Judge Lewis Stoughton.
