7-spot pays off big for Moniteau

Big inning backs Thompson's pitching as Warriors hand Karns City 1st loss, 9-2

Brady Thompson knows things are working for him on the mound when the ting of the bat is faint.

With a cut fastball as an out-pitch that handcuffs left-handed batters and baffles right-handed hitters, the senior pitcher on the Moniteau baseball team rolls up his fair share of weak outs.

The right-hander did just that Wednesday evening against rival Karns City.

Thompson scattered eight hits over seven innings and got 17 of 21 outs that never left the infield in dispatching the Gremlins 9-2 at Michelle Krill Field at Historic Pullman Park.“When I start seeing hitters not getting the sweet spots and I get slow rollers, I know I'm going to have a good day,” Thompson said. “I get a lot of ground balls and a lot of pop ups.”Thompson attacked the zone, walking just one batter and striking out five. He was well under his 100 pitch limit by the time he got the final out — fittingly on a ground ball to third baseman Dean Hershey.“He was very efficient,” said Karns City coach Sluggo Smith of Thompson. “He pounded the zone and he got ahead early. And that's what we've been preaching to our guys.”Thompson got plenty of run support in the top of the fourth.Leading 1-0 entering the frame, the Warriors put up a seven-spot, chasing Karns City starter Cole Sherwin.Moniteau took advantage of four walks in the inning and got a pair of two-run singles by Keagan Book and A.J. McElravy. The big inning has been something of a calling card for the Warriors this season.“That seems to be something we do,” said senior centerfielder Mason Mershimer, smiling. “We like to get them in bunches. We've been kind of streaky.”“I like to give myself some run support, but I didn't do that very well,” Thompson said, smiling and then patting Mershimer on the chest. “But my boys came through for me.”Moniteau (6-1) took a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly by Dawson Wallace that scored Branson Carson, who had tripled to lead off the second inning.Wallace had another sac-fly in the big fourth inning for Moniteau.“I always tell the guys, you can't win a game in the first inning, but you can lose one,” Smith said. “It just so happened that inning was the fourth for us.”Sherwin got the loss. He pitched well until his control issues in the fourth.Mallick Metcalf relieved Sherwin and also pitched well in stretches.Jacob Callihan had a pair of hits, including a double and Conner Shaffner had a RBI single for Karns City (4-1).“We hope we learned a lot from this and what we need to do to battle with them,” Smith said. “We definitely are a better team than we showed (Wednesday). The walks killed us.”Moniteau 010 701 0 — 9 7 1Karns City 000 010 1 — 2 8 0W: Brady Thompson 7IP (5K, 1BB).
