Adams Twp. joins team to look at flooding

ADAMS TWP — Adams Township on Monday night climbed on board a multi-municipality effort to stem stormwater issues in southwestern Butler County.

Supervisors voted to approve a joint resolution to look at flooding issues and possible solutions for communities in the Lower Connoquenessing Creek watershed.

Gary Peaco, township manager, said the efforts flow from collective concerns for flooding in the southwestern part of the county. Over the past several years, significant flooding has caused concern in several populated areas.

Several local leaders have determined finding a way to prevent flooding depends on teamwork.

“It was countywide, initially,” Peaco said. “(Municipalities in) southwestern Butler County decided to move forward on their own because of a lack of interest in the other areas.”

The group includes 10 local governments: Adams, Cranberry, Forward, Jackson, Lancaster and Penn townships as well as Evans City, Harmony, Seven Fields and Zelienople boroughs.

Butler County also agreed to invest in the push to analyze solutions for flooding problems.

The resolution that supervisors approved Monday documents the township's eagerness to join forces.

“We're willing to work together to kind of minimize some flooding within this area,” Peaco said.

He said looking into larger-scale mitigation efforts can help not only Adams Township, but also the communities downhill from it.

The resolution allows the township to collaborate with the other municipalities in the pact.
