The state police in Harrisburg announced Friday that spring and summer youth camps are being canceled for the second consecutive year.

The coronavirus pandemic is the reason for the cancellation of the camps in 2020 and 2021, according to a state police news release.

Col. Robert Evanchick, state police commissioner, said the decision to cancel Camp Cadet, Commissioner's Honor Camp and Sunny Day Camp was a difficult one because they are sources of community pride.

The news release said the state police conduct dozens of youth camps across the state, including 27 weeklong Camp Cadet programs for children ages 12 to 15, an honor camp for outstanding teens selected from previous Camp Cadet attendees, State Police Youth Week in partnership with the American Legion and National Guard, and 12 Sunny Day Camp programs for children and adults with special needs or disabilities.
