Spreading Her Skills

Seneca Valley senior Sarah White has been named the Butler Eagle's Girls Volleyball Player of the Year by the Eagle's sports staff.
SV's White shined all over the court in 2020

JACKSON TWP — Sarah White looks every bit the part of a standout volleyball player.

She's tall — 6-foot, lanky with sinewy arms that when fully extended create quite the wingspan.

She can jump, soaring well over the net as she unleashes her powerful swing.

When she's not getting kills, she's setting up teammates for one.

She's not afraid to get down on the floor, either, sprawling out to save a point.

Oh, and she has a devastating jump serve to boot.

It all added up to a remarkable season for White, who had 265 kills, 212 assists, 97 digs and 25 aces.

It's no wonder then that the Seneca Valley senior has been one of the most decorated players in the state over her four-year career.

She's made the all-state first team every season and just this year added a national honor to the list when she was named an Under Armour All-American.

White can add another accolade to her extensive resumé: 2020 Butler Eagle Girls Volleyball Player of the Year.

White, who recently signed her national letter of intent to play in college at Ohio State University (or as she correctly calls it, The Ohio State University) spent some time discussing her most recent awards, her fondest memories of high school volleyball and some things people might not know about her. Hint: She likes to Rock and Roll more than just on the volleyball court.

Butler Eagle: Congrats on getting the paper's player of the year award; it's well-deserved.

Sarah White: Thank you so much. I really appreciate it.

BE: What does it mean to you to be named Butler Eagle Girls Volleyball Player of the Year?

SW: Well, it's a great honor to be chosen, considering the great volleyball players in this area.

BE: You've achieved a lot of personal accolades over the years. What does it mean to you to be recognized as one of the best players, not only in the state, but in the country? It must be amazing.

SW: It's really surreal. I always look up to those players when I was young and now I'm on lists they were on.

BE: What players did you look up to?

SW: I admire Lauren Carlini, who was a setter at Wisconsin and now on the USA Women's National Team. I look up to her because I love how she plays, her attitude and competitiveness.

BE: Of all your volleyball accomplishments over the years, which one means the most to you?

SW: I'm really proud to be recognized as an Under Armour All-American.

BE: What influence did your sister Hannah (who is a redshirt sophomore on the Bloomsburg University women's volleyball team) have on you growing up, especially when it came to volleyball?

SW: Growing up with my older sister, I always wanted to do what she did. When she started playing volleyball, I wanted to as well, and it made us push one another to be better.

BE: You committed early to Ohio State and stuck with the Buckeyes for almost three years. Was there ever a time when you were reconsidering that choice, or were you Scarlet and Gray through and through?

SW: I never had second thoughts to be anywhere but The Ohio State.

BE: That's right. It's THE Ohio State University.

SW: (Laughing) Yes!

BE: I'm sure you're eager to make new memories there. What's your fondest volleyball memory so far?

SW: It has to be all the time I was able to spend with my teammates on bus rides, game days, and practices.

BE: What's your biggest volleyball regret?

SW: Not winning a WPIAL title.

BE: What's your biggest goal at The Ohio State University, the one thing you hope to achieve there?

SW: I want to win a national championship.

BE: OK. Lightning round. Quick questions and quick answers. Favorite food?

SW: Italian.

BE: Favorite TV show?

SW: Stranger Things.

BE: Really? Favorite character?

SW: Lucas.

BE: Favorite movie?

SW: Thor: Ragnarok.

BE: Is Die Hard a Christmas Movie? Explain.

SW: (Laughing) Um, no, it is not a Christmas movie. It has very little to do with the Christmas spirit. But it's a great movie.

BE: If you could meet any celebrity, who would you like to meet?

SW: (Ultramarathon runner, motivational speaker) David Goggins, because I love his mentality and how he lives his life with no excuses.

BE: Something people would be surprised to know about you?

SW: I love 60s and 70s Rock music —Creedence Clearwater Revival and Led Zeppelin.

BE: How did you get into 60s and 70s music?

SW: My dad. We listen to it a lot in the car.

BE: If you could describe yourself as a volleyball player in one word, what would that word be?

SW: Competitive, because I love to win and play at a high level.
