End of a season

WORTH TWP — For people who love to sail, October is the end of the line in Pennsylvania.

Last weekend, privately-owned boats were being pulled from Lake Arthur and stored for the winter. The Moraine Sailing Club will do the same Saturday with its 48 boats, ranging in length from 8 to 19 feet.

This annual tradition is done to comply with the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, which sets Oct. 31 as the end of the sailing season.

“Another sailing season is over. It's a sad, sad thing,” said Bill Paviol, commodore of MSC. “I'm taking my 25-foot boat out on the water one last time on Friday.”

Paviol is in the process of recruiting club members to show up at Davis Hollow Marina at Moraine State Park Saturday to help with closing another season.

“We should be at it from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.,” he said. “Getting all the boats out of the water and packed away, we take a large convoy to the barns at the Big Butler Fairgrounds. That's where we store the boats for the winter.

“I'm hoping to get 40 members to help out. We have the following weekend as well, but if we get that many people to come out, we should be able to take care of everything Saturday.”

Paviol has been commodore for two years. During the season, he spends almost every weekend on Lake Arthur. While sailing doesn't resume in Pennsylvania until April 15, he will be back on the water long before that.

“I'm taking a trip to the British Virgin Islands, Jan. 16 to 22,” he said. “It will be my first time there, and I'll be on a 45-foot boat.

“Until then, I'll be into other activities, including skiing at Seven Springs. I'm an outdoors guy.”

The club's annual banquet is Nov. 7. A pair of Intro to Sailing sessions will be held in February and March.

Paviol is looking forward to next year after seeing a spike in interest with MSC, which celebrated its 50th anniversary this year.

“We've never been busier than we were this year. Our membership went up from 192 to 210,” he said. “I think a lot of it was due to the virus. People wanted to get out and do something.”
