County has one more death due to COVID-19

19 new cases raise total to 637 confirmed

Butler County reported another death due to COVID-19 Wednesday and added 19 confirmed cases, according to state data.

According to Wednesday's report by the Pennsylvania Department of Health, the county's death toll rose to 16, reflecting one new death of a county resident due to complications from COVID-19.

The report also listed the county's total of confirmed cases at 637 since the pandemic began, reflecting an increase of 19 cases since Tuesday.

Butler Health System officials confirmed Wednesday that neither Butler Memorial Hospital nor Clarion Hospital reported any deaths since their update Monday, which also reported no deaths.

BHS reported that the Butler hospital is currently treating three patients for COVID-19, one of them in the intensive care unit. The system is reporting no inpatients at Clarion Hospital.

The county's 19 new cases is the largest increase of confirmed cases since it added 22 cases in the Department of Health's report July 21.

Although Wednesday represents the second-largest increase for Butler County since the pandemic began, it does not mean that 19 people tested positive overnight.

National labs processing results are experiencing backlogs due to high volume. Some tests can take as long as two weeks for results.

BHS hospitals have their own testing capabilities in which their labs can receive results within two days, but the reagents for these tests continue to be scarce.

Meanwhile, BHS continues to host outdoor testing at both hospitals. The results for outdoor facilities are sent to a national Quest Diagnostic lab, which is also experiencing long wait times.

Staff has performed 5,665 tests at Butler Memorial Hospital's outdoor facility, and Clarion Hospital has tested 2,931 at its own.
