Harmony Fire District crews deployed specialty tools to rescue a man who became trapped underneath a farm tractor while doing yardwork about 10 a.m. Sunday at his home on Little Creek Road in in Lancaster Township. Crews had to stabilize the tractor before lifting it off the man's lower left leg. He was taken to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh with apparent minor injuries.

Firefighters rescued a man who became trapped Sunday morning when a farm tractor rolled over, pinning one of his legs underneath it in Lancaster Township, authorities said.

The man, who is believed to be in his late-50s, was taken by ambulance to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh with apparent minor injuries, said Scott Garing, chief of the Harmony Fire District.

The man's name was not available.

The accident happened about 10 a.m. as the man was on the Farmall tractor trying to remove a tree stump in the yard at his home on the 400 block of Little Creek Road.

“It overturned on him,” Garing said, “and pinned his lower left leg to the ground.” The man's son was with him, and called 911.

Getting the 4,000-pound tractor off the man posed a bit of a challenge. Surprisingly, rescuers admitted, he did not appear to be in a lot of pain.

“There are a lot of moving parts on a tractor,” Garing said. “The tricky part wasn't getting it off him. The tricky part was stabilizing it so it didn't roll over any further and it didn't fall on him any worse. That was the hard part.”

The department deployed specialty tools including box cribbing and lifting struts as part of the rescue. A Harmony EMS technician tended to him before he was taken to the hospital. His condition was not available.

Fire crews were back at their station by about 11 a.m.
