1960 CAMPAIGN

The 1960 presidential election was brought to the heart of Butler County in the fall of 1960.

On Sept. 14, 1960, vice presidential candidate Henry Cabot Lodge spoke on the Butler County courthouse steps. According to the Butler Eagle, Lodge took part in a ceremony to rename the downtown Nixon Hotel to the Nixon Lodge.

Then candidate Sen. John F. Kennedy joked on Oct. 15, 1960, that he as a Democratic candidate shouldn't make a speech in front of the “that wonderful hotel.” He then went on to urge the next Congress to set minimum wage at $1.25 an hour, medical care for the elderly tied to Social Security, and aid for education and urban renewal, according to the John F. Kennedy Library archives.
