BC3 cancels all on-site learning until at least fall

Students in credited classes at Butler County Community College won't be setting foot on the scenic campus or any satellite locations until at least the fall.

The college's board of trustees voted Wednesday to move to remote instruction for the entire summer at all BC3 facilities to maintain safety for students and faculty during the coronavirus pandemic.

Nick Neupauer, BC3 president, went on to say on-site noncredit classes and all events scheduled at the college are canceled through at least June 30.

Neupauer said many other colleges and universities are taking the same action due to the uncertainty of the coronavirus and its progress.

He canceled classes and events to negate a situation where on-site classes would resume and Gov. Tom Wolf would extend the stay-at-home order and disaster declaration that closed all non-life sustaining businesses.

He also wants to avoid the need to make a hurried decision on whether to open or close, as was necessary recently.

Neupauer said faculty will work with students without access to a computer or WiFi as remote instruction continues.

“We've provided great flexibility in the remote model,” he said.

He said of the 3,000 students studying during the current semester, only 10 or 11 asked for a refund because they were not comfortable with remote instruction.

“That is a number that is far less than we thought,” Neupauer said.

He said computers are available for students who do not have one, but there have been very few requests for those units.

Neupauer said there are no current plans to cancel any courses or programs due to the decision to move to remote learning.

He said staff and faculty will continue to work at home and only essential employees will remain on campus.

No decision has been made as of yet regarding how instruction will be carried out in the fall semester.
