Traffic stop leads to drug charges

A woman is accused of driving on drugs with a young child in her sport utility vehicle in Butler.

State police Wednesday charged Tammy L. Palmeri, 45, of Butler with a felony count of child endangerment stemming from a traffic stop in February.

She also is charged with driving under the influence of a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance, both misdemeanors, and several traffic violations including driving with a suspended license.

Police said a trooper was on patrol Feb. 21 when he saw Palmeri driving a Ford Escape on West Brady Street with a small child sitting in the front seat. The officer made a traffic stop.

Palmeri told police that the child was her 4-year-old son. The child was unrestrained.

Palmeri subsequently failed field sobriety tests, and a consent search of her purse turned up several different pills that were in a pill bottle, police said.

She was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital for a blood draw. Toxicology reports showed she had amphetamine, buprenorphine and norbuprenorphine in her system, according to charging documents.

Buprenorphine is a painkiller that is used to treat opioid addiction, and norbuprenorphine is a metabolite of buprenorphine.

On Wednesday, District Judge William Fullerton signed an arrest warrant for Palmeri. Online court records did not list an attorney for her, and she could not be reached for comment.
