Human trafficking thriving amid pandemic

Seminar designed to find 'ANTIDOTE'

In recent weeks, COVID-19 has stopped the world in some areas of business.

But according to Butler County resident Jeanne Swaskoski, one area of business is thriving.

“Human trafficking is in our backyards,” Swaskoski said. “The Lord has led me to become involved and learn more about (it).”

Swaskoski is working with New Life Christian Ministries in Saxonburg to host a virtual seminar called “ANTIDOTE — America's Answer to the Human Trafficking Epidemic” Sunday.

The seminar's main speaker will be Marlene Carson, a self-identified “Sur-thriver” of domestic minor sex trafficking.

Carson, who was trafficked at the age of 15, is a founder of The Switch Anti-Trafficking Network. Headquartered in Westerville, Ohio, The Switch's mission is to educate communities about human trafficking and meet the needs of people who are trafficked.

Swaskoski said in October, she attended a seminar in Ohio where Carson gave a presentation.

“I came back home on fire to get the word out,” Swaskoski said. “Marlene graciously said she would come and speak.”

Initially, New Life Christian Ministries officials planned a seminar at the church. The in-person event was canceled because of COVID-19 concerns.

“It was heartbreaking to have to cancel,” Swaskoski said. “Marlene came up with the idea to live stream, because of the rise in trafficking since this pandemic.”

The pandemic has not changed the need for public education — and victim rescues — according to Swaskoski.

“The traffickers do not care if those they are trafficking are sick or not,” Swaskoski said. “It is about making ... money.”

Instead of inviting visitors to attend the seminar in person, New Life Christian Ministries is now offering it via Zoom.

Visitors can register for Sunday's 3:30 p.m. event at zoom.us/meeting/register/vpQpd-yupjortvj1lMIILnFPsHhKrp6ZOw.

A confirmation email with information about joining the seminar will be sent following registration.

Identifying the average age of trafficked individuals as 12, Swaskoski said the event is for audiences in fifth grade and older.

“The age to be trafficked continually lowers,” Swaskoski said.

Carson will be joined by another survivor names “El,” who will also be available to answer questions from visitors.

“We need to become aware,” Swaskoski said. “And know what to look for.”

She said the seminar will be viewable again after 4 p.m. Sunday.
