No Olympics for Geist — yet

Knoch graduate, Arizona shot-putter now turning attention to making 2021 Games

TUCSON, Ariz. — Jordan Geist is still working.

The Knoch graduate and junior thrower on the University of Arizona track and field team is still lifting weights.

He's still throwing the shot.

He's still preparing as if he can compete in a sanctioned meet.

But for Geist, the season — and 2020 Summer Olympic aspirations — are over before they even began.

Geist had his sights set on making it to Tokyo, but on Tuesday the IOC took the unprecedented step of postponing the summer games until 2021.

It didn't come as a surprise in the least to Geist.

“I think it is definitely for the best, for a lot of reasons,” Geist said. “There are athletes who can't even leave their houses let alone get out and practice and work out. And it's not just here, it's across the world.”

For Geist the delay may benefit him.

On the world stage, Geist, 21, is one of the youngest Olympic hopefuls in the shot put.

“It gives me time to grow and mature,” Geist said.

Next year figures to be a busy one for Geist.

In addition to possibly competing in the Olympics, Geist will have the Indoor World Championships, the Outdoor World Championships as well as the NCAA championships.

“It's going to be a crazy schedule,” Geist said. “I don't mind it, though.”

That's because Geist itches to compete.

In fact, he may throw in a few unsanctioned backyard events.

“All we need is a circle and a ball,” Geist said, chuckling.

Geist has also been lucky that as an Olympic hopeful, he's been able to train with his coach.

“I'm still have a place to lift and a place to throw,” Geist said. “What I don't have is the recovery tools, but I'm still pretty fortunate.”

Geist is still taking online classes at Arizona and said he's also “reading a lot of books and playing a lot of video games.”

When the pandemic is over and things get back to normal, Geist doesn't have concrete plans on what he wants to do first.

Well, almost.

“Maybe go to the store and see more ground meat and toilet paper,” he joked.
