Family fame

The start of the 2020 dirt track racing season may be delayed, but the Ferree family is enjoying the off-season just fine.

Alex Ferree, a Saxonburg resident who is turning 40, was inducted into the Pittsburgh Circle Track Hall of Fame this winter.

Ed Ferree, his father, is 68 and was inducted into the Lernerville Speedway Hall of Fame at the racetrack's banquet earlier this year .

“I feel kind of strange going into a Hall of Fame,” Alex said. “When I think of Hall of Fame inductions, I think about people being retired.

“I like to think I've got a few years of racing to go.”

His father has run the gamut in the sport, winning more than 300 features since beginning his career in 1981. He raced in a couple of NASCAR Cup Series events and had five top-10 finishes during a stint in the Xfinity Series.

“Honestly, I was more excited and satisfied with all Alex has done in the sport than anything I've done,” Ed Ferree said.

While Alex Ferree is doing more series racing these days — planning on doing the Ultimate Northeast Series this season — he has put together quite a history at Lernerville.

His 37 career wins at the Sarver oval rank fourth on Lernerville's all-time Late Model list, trailing only Bob Wearing Sr., Lynn Geisler and John Flinner. Ferree is six wins behind Flinner.

Ferree has also won six points championships at Lernerville, enjoying three-year title runs from 2007-09 and 2013-15.

“We just had another child, so I imagine I'll be running at Lernerville a little more often this year,” Ferree admitted. “The track is only a few miles from our house, so it just makes sense.”

His race season will be delayed as Ferree is recovering from a broken leg he suffered while playing hockey this winter.

Ferree also won points championships at Pittsburgh (Pa.) Motor Speedway in 2013 and 2014. He and his father finished first and second, respectively, in a feature race at PPMS.

“That's something neither one of us will ever forget,” Ed Ferree said. “That was a special night.”

Ed and Alex Ferree join Bob Wearing Sr. and Bob Wearing Jr. as the only father-son combos to win features at PPMS.

Ed Ferree has had his share of success at Lernerville as well, winning 21 features there and track titles in 1985 and 1986.

“I'm thrilled my dad is in that (Lernerville) Hall of Fame now,” Alex said. “That's quite a list of local legends he's joining.”

The Lernerville Hall of Fame was started in 2009. Ferree was inducted this year with Rod George, Jim Magill and Dunk Pakdozi. There are 53 members in that HOF now.

“I still remember my first win in Late Models there,” Ed Ferree said. “There is so much history at that track and I'm proud to be a part of it.”

Alex Ferree began racing go-karts at age 7 and progressed in the sport from there. He raced a Late Model owned by Joe Corrado of Butler for seven years. Ed Ferree used to race with Corrado in the 1980s.

“Alex runs his own car now,” his father said. “I used to help out on his cars a lot more, but race cars have changed so much over time and I really haven't kept up with those changes all that much.”

Ed Ferree last raced in 2018.

“I did about five races that year,” he recalled. “I'm 95 percent retired from racing right now. I won't totally rule out getting back out there for a race or two ... not yet.”
