Reindeer Race set for Zelienople

'Tis the season for hustle and bustle, holly and jolly, Santa — and don't forget the reindeer.

This Saturday's Get Fit Families Reindeer Race in Zelienople celebrates the season with races and fun runs for everyone in the holiday spirit. There's a 5k run starting at 9 a.m. followed by a 1 mile, then half-mile run. All the distances are beginner friendly.

Race director Joella Baker says that the races are also spectator friendly. The 5k event is a 2-loop, fairly level course and the half-mile is ideal for even the youngest participants. Walkers, dogs and strollers are welcome, too.

Joella expects at least 150 for Saturday's runs. Participants may sign up for one, two or all of the distances which run consecutively beginning with the 5k start at 9 a.m. The one-mile event follows at approximately 9:45, depending on when the 5k participants finish. The half-mile run should start by 10 a.m.

To add to the festivities, all participants are encouraged to dress in holiday attire. There will be a costume contest with prizes for best male, female and group costumes overall and in age groups.

All participants receive a commemorative Reindeer Race hat, goody bag and Christmas ornament. And all are welcome to join the post-race awards ceremony and party in the warmth of the Masonic Hall near Zelie's Community Park. There will be plenty of pizza, pasta, chicken and rice, cookies, hot cocoa and more. There's also a bake sale and auction to support Get Fit Families Triathlon program.

Reindeer Race offers awards for top three male and female finishers and age group awards for top three in categories from 4 and Under through 70+ in each distance. All participants aged 12 and under receive a finisher's medal while the first place boy and girl in groups ages 11 and Under and 12-18 also earn $250 scholarships to Get Fit Families Youth Triathlon program. Scholarships may be used for the 2020 summer triathlon program or for Get Fit Families summer camps.

Reindeer Race is the major fundraiser for the Get Fit Families triathlon program.

You may sign up for Reindeer Race events online until Thursday night. Day of event registration opens at 8 a.m. on Saturday at the Masonic Hall in Zelienople.
