Butler man sentenced in sexual assault of girl

With time served, he can be paroled

A Butler man was sentenced to jail Wednesday for sexually assaulting a girl under the age of 13 last year.

Edwin Bell, 65, pleaded guilty in July to corruption of minors and two counts of indecent assault without consent, all misdemeanors.

He was sentenced to one to two years behind bars and five years probation as part of the plea deal.

Additionally, Judge William Shaffer required Bell to register as a sex offender for 15 years.

Bell was arrested last October and held in the Butler County Prison for more than a year. He was given credit for 385 days of time already served, making him eligible for parole.

Police said the attack occurred Sept. 15, 2018, at Bell's home. According to authorities, the girl went there to collect cans for her mother, who would exchange them for money.

In an interview with police, the girl told officers Bell started smoking marijuana and made her smell it before suddenly kissing her on the lips and sexually assaulting her.

The victim's sister attended the sentencing, calling Bell “a low life creep waiting to strike again.”

She said that her sister, who she called her “other half,” was too scared to go to sleep after the attack.

“You tried to do the same things to me that you did to my sister,” she said. “I was right about you. We'll continue to grow together and move past this.”

City police originally filed charges of rape, indecent assault and corruption of minors against Bell after what investigators describe in court documents as a drug-fueled and violent sexual assault and rape of the victim. Police said Bell also locked the victim in his bathroom at one point.

In Bell's plea deal, prosecutors dropped the felony rape and false imprisonment charges. Bell declined to comment during his sentencing.
