Grants aim to facilitate food recovery

Save some leftovers for the rest of them.

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection is accepting grant applications for the new Food Recovery Infrastructure Grant Program.

The program provides assistance to eligible nonprofit organizations such as shelters and food banks for proper food management.

Grants of up to $200,000 are available to purchase equipment like refrigerators, freezers, refrigerated vehicles and more to use food before it becomes waste for disposal.

Janine Kennedy with the Alliance for Nonprofit Resources, which manages the Butler County Food Bank, said the organization aims to serve as much fresh food as possible.

She said the organization doesn't typically hang on to food for too long, nor do local food cupboards and pantries.

“The goal is to get the food and get it out into the hands of those that need it,” Kennedy said.

But some cupboards could use the grant.

“I'd want to pool to see what their needs are,” Kennedy said. “We would have to see who would benefit and how they would benefit.”

Kennedy said if the fit is right, ANR's experience in grant writing would help in the application process.

“We would work with them and help them apply on their behalf,” she said. “We'd work to get something.”

Reducing food waste is a priority in DEP's Climate Action Plan.

“Protecting food and preventing food waste is also an important way to reduce landfill waste and address climate change, as rotting food produces methane, a strong greenhouse gas,” said DEP Secretary Patrick McDonnell in a news release Friday.
