NC, Mars post dominant wins in PIAA soccer
Grace Billmann scored twice and Jayden Sharpless once as North Catholic's girls soccer team proved too much for Mercyhurst Prep in a 3-0 PIAA Class 2A first-round decision at the Mars Athletic Complex Tuesday night.
Tehya Dave and Sharpless both added an assist.
Andrea Bean earned the shutout with six saves for the WPIAL champion Trojanettes (15-4), who will face Bald Eagle in a quarterfinal Saturday at a time and site to be determined.
Mars 6, Warren 1 — Taylor Hamlett scored three times and added two assists as the WPIAL champion Planets dominated District 10 champion Warren in a Class 3A first-round contest at North Allegheny's Newman Stadium.
Also scoring for Mars (19-0-1) were Ellie Coffield with two goals and Londynn Gonzalez.
Caroline Wroblewski, Gracie Dunaway and Gonzalez (2) added assists in the victory.
The Planets will meet West Allegheny, a 2-1 winner over Hollidaysburg, in a quarterfinal Saturday at a time and site to be determined.
Bald Eagle 2, Karns City 1 — McKenna Martin's goal in the second half cut KC's deficit to one, but the District 9 champion Gremlins (17-2-1) did not score again in this Class 2A first-round meeting in Brockway.
In a PIAA Class 2A first-round playoff at Meadville High School, North Catholic swept District 10 champ Corry by scores of 26-24, 25-21 and 25-17.The Trojanettes (21-1) will play defending state champion Bald Eagle in Saturday’s quarterfinal round at a site and time to be determined.
